Forcing a woman to wait three days and consult with some asshole trying to convince her not to abort will not change the fact that that woman does not want to have a child. Even if it changes her mind about terminating the pregnancy, it doesn’t change whatever circumstances brought her to an abortion clinic in the first place. She’ll still walk out just as devoid of choices, just as un- or underemployed, just as broke, just as in debt, just as uninsured, just as lacking daycare, just as unable to care for herself and/or her existing children, just as in need of medication that she can’t take while pregnant, just as enmeshed in an unhealthy or abusive relationship, just the same as she was when she walked in. She’ll just have been guilted into making sacrifices she doesn’t want to make, to honor someone else’s mistaken perceptions about her morality.

Todd Akin thinks doctors perform abortions on women who aren’t actually pregnant

abaldwin360:

In a 2008 Speech, Todd Akin Said Doctors Give Abortions to Women ‘Who Are Not Actually Pregnant’.

It turns out that Todd Akin’s “legitimate rape” comment might not be the most inaccurate and stupid statement of the Missouri Representative’s career. In a 2008 speech on the House floor, Rep. Akin said (emphasis mine):

“You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: Not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things.”

“All of these things are common practice,” Akin continued, “but all of that information is available for America.”

Just think about that for a second. “Abortions to women who are not actually pregnant.” Absolutely mindboggling.

He also compared abortion to slavery.

“There will be a day - just as there is today, where people say, ‘Who would ever support slavery?’” Akin said. “In the future, there will be a day when men will say, ‘Who would have ever supported something so un-American as abortion?”

Really makes his “ladylike” comment seem not so bad, huh? Just a reminder, Todd Akin is the Republican Senate candidate in Missouri, a candidate that “mainstream” Republicans are supporting.

‎I do not believe that just because you’re opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don’t? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is.

It is ok to need an abortion.

This is nice to hear.  Since I’ve been the main one telling myself I was so irresponsible.
Shit happens.  You learn a lesson.  You move on.

The so-called “pro-life” movement’s philosophy.

One of the best political cartoons that I’ve seen.

I saw another note on this post saying something to the effect that that’s not Romney holding the umbrella, it’s H. W. Bush.
And this cartoon is still relevant.

I love this. I feel like a lot of feminist art tends to reflect an aggressive, incredibly defensive outpouring of pent-up feelings about misogyny and towards misogynists, which I find a little off-putting. I mean, I get it, but I guess I just don’t find outrage super sustainable.
But this is legitimately empowering. This is comforting, not intimidating. And if anyone is offended by its message, seriously, they can go fuck themselves.

The Pro-Life Movement: Dangerous, Selfish, Lazy:

When a living, air-breathing human being actually comes into the world, being “pro-life” becomes infinitely harder. This requires you to actually care about people. The sort of care that takes a critical mind, patience, and self awareness. The sort of care that requires figuring out why things are the way they are so that you can work toward actually fixing them. The sort of care that takes compassion and an unending dedication to a better for life for all humans.

The sort of care that marching around, waving huge dead baby posters, and calling women murderers is completely and utterly devoid of.

Laci Green.

To add on:

A sort of care that comparing abortion to rape and the Holocaust/any genocide or the extreme focus on sex-selective abortions or telling people to deal with the punishment of a pregnancy for having sex or calling them sluts is completely absent.

Anti-choicers don’t actually care about people.  (via stfuprolife)
